HPE students and alumni continue to excel in major sporting events

Congratulations to students and alumni from the Department of Health and Physical Education for winning various awards in major international and national competitions. Their impressive performance was greeted by a round of applause from all of us at FLASS.

Joanna So, a student from the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme (BHE), won a bronze medal in the women’s singles events at the 2021 Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy held in Beijing in October. With a score of 155.65, she achieved her new personal best in the event. A total of 32 participants from nine countries participated in the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, which was organised as an Olympic test event for the 2022 Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing in February 2022.

Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching, both BHE students, claimed the silver medal in the women’s doubles, bronze in the mixed doubles and bronze in women’s team competitions at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2021 held at Doha from 28 September to 5 October 2021. The Hong Kong Table Tennis team won a total of one silver and three bronze medals at this year’s Asian Championships, their best result since 2007. Hoi-kem also won the silver medal in WTT Star Contender Doha 2021 held in September.

 
The 14th National Games

Twenty students and two graduates from HPE participated in five sports, including badminton, canoeing, cycling, karate and wushu, at the 14th National Games which was concluded successfully on 27 September 2021. They won two gold and two bronze medals.

Lee Sze-wing, a BHE student, won the Women’s Individual Road Cycling event at the Games on 26 September 2021, claiming the city’s second gold in the largest national sporting event held every four years. It was also the first ever National Games gold medal for Hong Kong women’s road cycling.

Lau Chi-ming, a student in the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management programme, won the bronze medal in the Men’s Karate Kata at the National Games on 18 September 2021.

Eighteen karatekas were divided into two groups to compete in the Men’s Kata event. Chi-ming was the second runner-up and the first runner-up in the first two rounds of group matches, qualifying him for the bronze medal bout. He then won his first-ever National Games medal by defeating an opponent from Guangdong.

Honorary fellow and alumna Sarah Lee Wai-sze won gold and bronze in the women’s sprint and keirin events respectively at the National Games.
